Brainy Actz Escape Room Review

So last Monday my family and I did an escape room. This isn't the first time we had done one and it wasn't the first time we had visited this particular company. The truth is this would be my 4th one and definitely not my last. It has kind of been our family's go to outing because it really brings you close together, or you know makes your family realize they love because they are stuck with you and not by choice.

This time we went to a company called Brainy Actz in Irvine, CA. We have been before and last time we did their pirate room. This time it was their car heist room. So this review is going to be kind of vague only because I don't want to give away the answers, the room, or anything that might cause someone who reads this to be able to escape easier.

There was 7 of us who were participating and we have all done at least 2 of these. We kind of knew what we had to do, however, we have only made it out once before so we kind of have a bad reputation. The room was really well themed. It definitely looked like you were in a car mechanic garage which was the theme behind it.

So we started to search when our hour started. Now the way this room went, it was more of a hide and seek than a scavenger hunt as I call escape rooms. In the past the rooms we had done the clues were linear so they led you to what you needed to do next. This one didn't really have that same effect. This room was more so the clues were very independent of another. This made things really difficult.

When we would find one clue and complete it we didn't really know where we needed to go next. Or in some cases we would find a few clues and think they went together, but in reality they didn't. It got to a point where I threw my hands in the air and said I give up.

Now we continued on and we tried our best. The problem was some of the ways to solve things weren't explained very well. We knew what we needed to solve or unlock something, but no idea what we did with said item or picture or clue. It made it very annoying and we got stuck on things we shouldn't have.

Also another problem that occurred was that we would get an answer right and have no idea we did because there was no sound to alert us. We kind of just stood there going was this right and would be forced to use a hint when in reality we had already solved said item. Due to this reason we ended up solving something twice without even realizing it.

There was also a lot of extra details that weren't needed and instead made the room even harder. I understand these are meant as a challenge, but this was just cheesy and not that much fun.

In the end we were about 98% done with the room which was an accomplishment. We have always come super close to finishing the room and always get stuck in the beginning where we run out of time at the end when we are rocking and rolling.

Of the other 3 that I have done, I would definitely not recommend this particular room again. I am not sure what the other rooms are like there, but I can say the pirate room they had there before was pretty fun.

I wouldn't say don't go to Brainy Actz, but I would say that I wouldn't do this particular room if you don't want to have the moments of throwing your hands into the air.

Have you ever done an escape room? Do you enjoy them?

  1. I've never heard of an escape room before! Is it something the entire family can do? It sounds really fun
